The 1st Pop-Up Cupcake Lounge

Well that was a wild ride!

Two weekends ago, Cocoa Dot Cakes hosted its very first Pop-Up Cupcake Lounge.

❤️ Check another goal off this year’s list!! ❤️

What is a pop-up shop you ask? GREAT QUESTION! Shopify explains it this way:

A “pop-up shop” is a short-term, temporary retail event that is “here today, gone tomorrow”. Pop-up retail is the temporary use of physical space to create a long term, lasting impression with potential customers.

Pretty cool eh? It’s still a fairly new concept to Kamloops with only a few other events having happened and our friends Callie and Bri of Makeshift paving the way! (Check out their list of events here).

We’re still getting to know one another so you may not know this about me yet, but I absolutely love shopping at funky little shops. Coffee in hand, I can spend hours slowly wandering around the carefully curated collections and taking in the beautiful vignettes of stores like Castles & Cottages (Kamloops), The Spruce Collective (Abbotsford) and Alchemy (Kelowna). There’s just something so special and indulgent about stepping into a boutique that is thoughtfully arranged with objects reflecting the personality and passion of their curator.

That’s exactly what we tried to accomplish with the Cupcake Lounge. We wanted to host an event that would provide a fresh and fun experience for cupcake lovers in Kamloops.

Alaysha and I worked our butts off in the days before to transform the already beautiful Helm Collective space into what we envision a storefront could be like for Cocoa Dot Cakes.

And it was perfect

I want to sincerely thank everyone who came out to support us in this big, HUGE thing that we did; the entire weekend was absolutely flawless and I am completely blown away by the turnout from the community and our family and friends.

I also really want to thank my husband, Steve, for always being 1000% behind me and my crazy ideas, even if it means he has spend his evenings and weekends doing my books, running endless errands and talking me off the ledge when I feel like I’ve taken on too much too quickly.  And then there’s the wonderful Alaysha; my hype-woman and right-hand. I don’t think I’ll ever stop telling people how big of an impact you have already made on my business (and me, awwww!!). Love you girl!

Big, BIG love to the following #bossbabes for helping us pull together such a fun event:

Stunning florals and those lusciously creamy couches: Bryanne of Bryanne White Designs

String Lights: Renee of Wild Sage Events

Drapery: Denise & Brittany of Aglow Bridal Lounge

Business Update | Lots going on but most importantly…Alaysha!!

Well, I had planned on doing this update a month or two ago but things have been so busy it fell off my radar. Not that I’m complaining – being busy is the absolute best, but it also means that some of the other stuff that goes along with owning a business takes a backseat.

As much as I would like to say that my days are filled with nothing but frosting swirls and sprinkles, there’s a bit more to it than that. On top of the usual stuff that needs to happen to keep Cocoa Dot Cakes going (bookkeeping, answering emails, grocery shopping, sourcing out special ingredients and practicing new recipes and techniques so I can keep up on the trends) there’s also daily social media posts, planning for upcoming holidays, organizing special events and keeping on top of my crazy goal list. The fun stuff. The stuff that keeps things fresh and interesting. And its also the stuff that is the first to be neglected when I’m busy with “the real work”.

Eventually, after trying to make it work by myself and failing miserably for an embarrassingly long period of time, I decided it was time to put on my boss babe hat and hire my first employee!!

Enter, Alaysha!

Ain’t she sweet?!?

Alaysha started with me around the end of February and I’ve been hogging her all to myself until now. You’ve probably noticed that my social media has really kicked into high-gear over the last little bit and that is 100% of the dynamo that is Alaysha. She came on as my Cupcake Community Coordinator (I think jobs are the most fun when there’s a cool title to go along with it!) and she will be working with me to get more cupcakes into the world through innovative events, creative shopping experiences, hands-on workshops and more!

But enough from me; I’ll let you hear it from Alaysha herself…

Hi, I’m Alaysha!

I joined the Cocoa Dot Cakes team as the new Cupcake Community Coordinator so I’ll be working with Megan on the workshop series, as well as planning some super fun new events!

A bit about me… I’ve always been a planner. I love lists, organizing, and the exciting atmosphere that comes with executing an event. Needless to say I’ve always been the organizer of parties and dinners for my friends and family! This sparked my interest in the events field and by the time I graduated the Events & Conventions program at Thompson Rivers University I knew it was my passion. I was presented with the opportunity at Cocoa Dot Cakes where I discovered another passion- social media! Who would have thought I could make a career out of something that I did all day for myself anyways? I have never considered myself to be an overly creative person, but have found that creating social media content allows me to be creative in my own, unique way. Not to mention, I love food. I mean, really love food, so working with an incredibly talented chef such as Megan has been a reward all on its own. I get to snack on cupcakes while posting on Facebook and Instagram… hello, dream job! I’m so excited to be a part of the Cocoa Dot Cakes journey and I can’t wait to see what the future holds… I know it will be sweet!

The Perfect Swirl | Cupcake Workshop

“A goal should scare you a little, and excite you A LOT” ~ Joe Vitale

There couldn’t be a truer statement about how the Perfect Swirl came to be; I’ve been looking at that one on my goal list for years – YEARS! And now I’ve finally done it! I hosted my first cupcake workshop this past Saturday and it was more fun than I ever could have imagined.

It was also a ton of hard work; lots of procrastination, self-doubt and uncertainty, but as they say, the harder you work for something the greater you feel when you finally achieve it. AND I FEEL AMAZING!!!

But enough about me and more about the workshop! Am I right?

It sold out!! Which was an awesome and really unexpected thing. I mean, I had hoped it would, but I wasn’t sure it would and I kept telling myself that even if one person registered I would give them the best workshop of their life!! But as luck and the universe would have it, I got to host eight wonderfully creative women.

Each got their own tool kit that contained the piping tips and bags they would be using to learn four different techniques, and a dozen chocolate and vanilla canvases (cupcakes) to practice on.

There were some absolutely BEAUTIFUL cupcakes being piped by everyone.

And sprinkled with a little magic <3

Man, I just love a good sprinkle mix.We had lots of laughs throughout the morning, which can be chalked up to good times and the sugar high that resulted from a bit of finger licking.

There were also a few instances of frosting being piped directly into mouths

Oh, and snacks. Lots of snacks.

How beautiful are these fruit plates? So gorgeous! And cheese…because, yes.

Now for some more cheese…

Thank you to the lovely ladies who came out for my first workshop ; you went WAY too easy on me.

Stay tuned for upcoming workshop dates and new themes! The best way to find out when these super fun events are happening is to subscribe to my blog and follow me on Facebook or Instagram.
